Gaelic Football & Hurling
GAA plays an integral part in our school community. GAA provides our students with an extra-curricular activity promoting teamwork, physical wellbeing and above all; fun with their peers. We had a successful gaelic football season in 2021/2022 with our boys' footballers losing by only one point in the Fingal League final.
In 2023, we entered five teams into competition. We had four football teams - junior girls, junior boys, senior girls and senior boys entered into the Fingal league. We had a hurling team entered into Cuman na mBunscol for the first time ever. The senior girls and junior girls teams both reached the semi-finals in 2023.
Our aim is to develop the basic skills of Gaelic games during our weekly training sessions and give the children the opportunity to represent their school by wearing the school jersey and trying their best on match days.
Soccer
Mr. Finnerty and Mr. Riney worked with the schools Boys's Soccer team. This year we participated in the School's FAI cup, the FAI 5-a-side tournament and a local schools 5-a-side Blitz. Training was every Wednesday and comprised of children from 4th, 5th and 6th class. The level of participation, enthusiasm and skill that Mr. Finnerty and Mr. Riney witnessed this year, both in training and in matches, was outstanding. The boys from 4th and 5th class narrowly lost the final of the local soccer Blitz to Darndale after playing brilliantly throughout the tournament and the general standard of soccer we witnessed throughout the year was fantastic.
Athletics
St Francis of Assisi have grown from strength to strength in their participation in athletics since our first ever event in 2018. We participate in Cross Country events organised by Dublin city council which give the children from 3rd to 6th class the opportunity to compete against children from all across Dublin. These events are always wonderful days out and children gain a lot from the experience. In May each year, we participate in the Cumman na mBunscol Athletics events, which take place in Morton Stadium in Santry.
The children get the opportunity to compete across a range of track and field events including sprints, relays, long distance, high jump, long jump, shot put and hurdles. In the build up to the competition the children are very dedicated in their training which often takes place before school. It is a great opportunity for the children to be exposed to such a wide variety of athletics events.
