National Tree Day
We celebrated National Tree Day on the 8th October 2009. The children helped Mr. Cullen to plant some trees in the grounds of the school. We planted Hazel, Ash, Mountain Ash and Oak trees. These trees are all native trees to Ireland. Mr. Cullen also brought in some leaves of other native trees to show us. We looked at the Holly tree leaves, the leaflets on the Ash tree and the catkins on the Silver Birch tree. He also showed us the Arbutus Tree leaves. This year is the Year of the Arbutus. The Arbutus is also called the Strawberry Tree. It is a rare native evergreen tree. A fruit grows on this tree that looks like a strawberry but you wouldn’t like to eat them as they are very bitter and not sweet like strawberries. We will have some photos of our planting soon!
